[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Game Boy Bubble Gum

I bought this nifty bubble gum pack at an Eckerd Drug store for 89 cents (US) sometime in the early 1990s. If you haven’t noticed, it resembles a Nintendo Game Boy unit. I can’t remember the shape of its contents (long since chewed), but most likely the gum took the form of flat pink floppy Game Boys. Each pack also contained three trading cards featuring artwork from popular Game Boy games on the front and tips for each game on the back. It’s fun to see where Nintendo merchandising ends up.

hmm.. I don’t really remember the Game Boy gum.. I do remember, back in the late 80s-early 90s, some sort of Zelda-themed fruit gummies which if I recall tasted quite good. Those are the only Nintendo-themed candies I remember at the time, aside from a mario-themed gum that was really bright pink/purple. As for that gum case, I’m guessing it might be kind of collectible, and worth something now.

That list of all the Nintendo candy ever made is missing one type of candy that I can think of. Also made by the Au’Some Candies company (I think) was a set of Mario Kart-themed candy. My memory of what type of candy exactly is unclear, but I still owned the outer plastic shell of one of them. Basically, it was a clear plastic Mario Kart character (as well as the kart, complete with working wheels) with candy that was inside (I believe).
The one I own is a yellow Donkey Kong.
I also own one of the Bob-Omb candies that supposedly stopped production after 9/11. The picture in the article appears to be computer generated, as the bombs are too smooth and the color of the one I own is different. I have it stored in a box with collectible toys, so I’m unsure exactly what was the difference, but I think the top part (the lid) was orange. Not entirely sure at the moment.

Oh, nevermind, I see it listed now.
I do see the Mario Kart candies now. I must have glazed over them previously.
However, I know of another one that is not being shown, not made by Au’Some Candies. Back in the very early nineties, there was a set of Super Mario Bros. gummies (yes, a different one from all the varieties shown) based on Super Mario Bros. 3.
I only had a few of them before they were discontinued, and I was a rather young age, so unfortunately my memories of it are very vague. If I can find a picture somewhere on the internet, I will do my best to refer to it here.

I noticed there was a couple that were missing later. I had a friend that remembered that some aren’t there. It still has a lot there to search though.

I never had this particular gum package but I do know that gamegear ones also existed, and those came with cards I think, I was pretty young at the time. This was in the early 90s.

The gum was indeed flat, pink, floppy Game Boys. Thanks for reminding me of another piece of my childhood!

I actually have a factory sealed pack of this gum+playing cards im sure its cooler to look at then to chew at this point.
