Probably either Silent Thunder: A10 Tank Killer 2, or Star Fox.

  2. Matt Says:

    Definitely Gradius. That counts, right?

  3. Multimedia Mike Says:

I would have to say Pilotwings for the SNES. At least, that was the most sophisticated flight sim I ever played.

  4. SQLGuru Says:

Totally unrelated, but: I’m sure by now you’ve seen this – http://gizmodo.com/379708/ben-heck-mods-apple-iigs-into-a-bright-shiny-laptop

    Ok, back on topic….

A10 Tank Killer (the original) was the one I always went back to…..it was fun and easy enough and blowing stuff up was easy that way. LHX (helicopter) was another one that I would spend a good bit of time with.

And if we’re just talking “flight”, Wing Commander was awesome.

I was really into F-15 Strike Eagle and Gunship.

  7. Benj Edwards Says:

I enjoyed playing F-19 quite a bit back in the day. Also F-22 Retaliator — and don’t forget Top Gun for the NES. 🙂

  8. Geoff V. Says:

FS II for the Apple II claimed hours and hours of my youth.
Space-Sim for Pentium was also very fun.
    A-10 may be my favorite.

  9. Benj Edwards Says:

Did anybody else like Star Raiders for the Atari 800? Man, that blew me away as a kid. I really felt like I was flying through space.

  10. Daniel Says:

I always liked Flight Simulator by… Sublogic was it?

  11. Geoff V. Says:

Benj, how could I have forgotten Star Raiders? It was one of the few games of that era that seemed to draw you into the game play.

  12. Zoyous Says:

Daniel… I think you’re right. If it’s the one I’m thinking of, the landscape was a square grid. There was a flat range of mountains on the perimeter which weren’t solid. You could fly through, and a little ways beyond the edge of the grid you would wrap around to the other side.

Then, Flight Simulator 2.0 had Chicago and NYC. I can’t count how many times I crashed trying to land at O’Hare Intl Airport.

  13. Dennis - SGMM Says:

TIE Fighter. It had a storyline, complex controls, cutscenes and characters. Groundbreaking.

  14. XCALBR8 Says:

I’d have to say the Wing Commander games, X-wing, and Tie Fighter have to be my all time faves for PC. f-15 strike eagle took a lot of my time as well but not as much as the sci-fi flight sims. Star Raiders was and still is an awesome game. I still have the cart and the special pad w/ overlay for the 2600.

  15. EastBayAnt Says:

    Glider. 😉

As fun as that was, LHX took up a lot of my time, as did TIE Fighter.

  16. medarch Says:

    F-19 Stealth Fighter! An uber-classic!

  17. Benj Edwards Says:

Sub-Logic’s Flight Simulator series was always too complicated for me. Too realistic, I guess. But it definitely was impressive.

  18. EllisGL Says:

I remember that ad and wanting one….
