20 Years of Internet Search
September 10th, 2010 by Benj EdwardsThe Internet’s first search engine, Archie, launched 20 years ago today. To celebrate this occasion, I decided to look back at the early days of many search engines (mostly web) of the past 20 years. The resulting slideshow is up on PC World.com for all to see. I hope you enjoy it.

I adore old computer magazines form the eighties. Your presetations remind me that old, good style of writing. 🙂

Great slideshow Benj. Looking back at those old screenshots it’s a marvel to think, it’s only been 20 years…

I remember Lycos being even more primitive than that! Remember before web forms, when it was a “searchable index” and you had to manually choose the server with the lowest load?

I’m sure you’re right, Jay. I couldn’t find a screenshot of Lycos older than the one you see in the slideshow. It’s not the earliest version of the Lycos website.

Amazing! It’s the first time I hear about Archie. I only have the internet at home for a decade.
