[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Capcom’s First PC CD-ROM

Mega Man X CD-ROM advertisement - 1995Digging up video games in a mall ashtray

I was a huge fan of Mega Man X when it first came out on the Super NES in 1993.

…Well, I rented it, anyway, and I played it more than any other side-scrolling Mega Man game before or since. I loved finding the secret Hadoken fireball power up, which I read about in Nintendo Power.

Much to my present-day surprise (even though I owned this magazine when it was new), Capcom produced a version of Mega Man X for the PC, and on a CD-ROM no less. Has anyone out there played it? I’m wondering if the adaptation was any good.

[ P.S. Shortly after writing this entry, I tracked down a warez copy of Mega Man X for the PC, and it’s surprisingly well done. However, its utilization of MIDI music provides for a pretty surreal Mega Man experience — surreal in the sense that the tunes generally sound horrible compared to MM games that are famous for their music. ]

I’m really curious about this 6-button controller that the ad mentions. Has anybody played with it, or can produce a pic?

    Mega Man II FTW.

I’m more interested to see what the free 6 button controller looked like. My favorite MM game was probably Mega Man 3 for the NES.

Absolutely right about the quality of this port. I still have this disc, having fished it out of a clearance bin at KB Toy Store circa 1996 (along with an equally excellent port of one of the many Street Fighter II titles).

I was especially surprised since I had picked up a floppy-based PC port of a (probably non-canon) Mega Man title years early that was atrocious.

Mega Man 2 was my favorite. Though I was terrible at all Mega Man games and could only beat them with the Game Genie. Yes, I’m a little bit ashamed.

9 on my PS3 lol. I was never into Mega-Man back then, more into PAC-Man or Tetris. Meh, Atari mostly as you know lol.

That being said, Rogue Legacy is pretty nifty and similar to the gameplay.

If you look in the picture, you can see a portion of the controller, with big round buttons… looks quite unconfortable to me to say the least lol.

    (sorry for double/triple post RW)

I never played this version, although I do recall seeing it for sale around the same time that I was into playing the SNES version. Given that I had already purchased the cartridge for about $10, and that I did not have a PC at that time, there really wasn’t much point in getting the CD-ROM version… though I still secretly wanted it due to my love for the game, which remains to this day.

As for favorite Mega Man game, for me it’s a toss-up between X and 2, the latter of which I only discovered when I bought it as my second choice after learning that the store was out of “Bart vs the Space Mutants.” Yeah, a definite happy accident there.

    FM MIDI? Heheh!

Although tiny, the graphics look marginally better than the SNES version, but if the music sounds terrible, well, that is a deal-breaker.
