Hit the link for a BASIC source printout — and a smidgen of self-aggrandizement“D&D #1 represents one of the earliest known computer role playing games. Originally created and refined between the years 1975-1977, this game is one of the few true founding efforts of the entire computer gaming genre. Interestingly the ascii based tile graphics are a clear forerunner of what followed in Ultima and many other computer role playing games, and thus remains relevant to the genres history.

My favorite was the DND-1 in BASIC. I started with BASIC and it still has a place in my heart. I spent many hours in the early 1980’s writing BASIC programs for my school to use in things like tracking our Junior High’s sports teams statistics. I also wrote many programs for myself during this time. Everything for me was stored on a datassette. I had no floppy drives back then! Very nice to see the program. One day, I hope to convert it to Commodore BASIC and see if I can make it work. That will be a fun project.
Thank you very much for this little gem. I am also an Ultima fan, playing several of the games on my C-128 over the years. I even went into Ultima Online for about a year and a half in the 1990’s.
Thanks again for this – I really is nice to see stuff like this.
