[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Game Boy Lemmings
May 4th, 2015 by Benj EdwardsMy brother received the IBM PC port of Lemmings as a gift (probably for Christmas) in the early 1990s. It made a distinct impression in my young mind, with its vivid VGA graphics, a playful MIDI soundtrack, and charismatic little creatures that you could bid to do your every whim.
I have never played the Game Boy version, but this ad caught my eye.
When I wrote a feature about the most ported games of all time for 1UP.com back in 2007, Lemmings featured prominently with ports to 28 systems up to that point in time. What can I say — Lemmings is a classic.
Discussion Topic of the Week: What’s the best Lemmings-like or Lemmings clone game? (Other than Lemmings, of course — The Humans and Baldies come to mind.)

I used to play Lemmings on a 486PC, the Xmas Lemmings edition was very good. The PC mouse is a must for this type of gane so the Gameboy version is just okay, but if you’re curious there are many Gameboy emulators on Android that you can install from Google Play and give it a try.

Well I’m aware of an open source Lemmings-like called “Pingus” …

The author describes it as something that started off as a clone, but then slowly incorporated a few of its own ideas over time. It’s been a looong time since I last played it… but the site is still alive after all these years.

Lemmings were cool, but I hated its 3D versions.

My first exposure to Lemmings was on a 386 with a custom boot disk. It was much like Lode Runner and other great arcade/puzzle games. Our whole family loved it.

DinoDudes for the Jaguar, of course!
Actually, this made me fondly remember a game on the Amiga. It doesn’t fit the Lemmings mold exactly. It had such great music, too.
