[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Genesis Does Contractions
October 6th, 2015 by Benj EdwardsThis is a rather famous early ad for the Sega Genesis that I have never featured until now. It played upon the dramatic graphical differences between the Genesis and the NES, claiming “Genesis Does What Nintendon’t.”
It’s worth emphasizing that Sega is comparing its console to the 8-bit NES here, and not the Super NES — Nintendo’s 16-bit machine had not yet been released in the US, allowing Sega to get a jump on the next generation in the American market.
Discussion Topic of the Week: What year did you first get a Sega Genesis? What were your first games for it?

Christmas 1992, I was 7 years old. The console came bundled with Sonic 2, and my parents added Outrun, Streets of Rage 2, and Columns.

I got a Sega Genesis in 2005, from a coworker who didn’t want it anymore. He gave me a few games for it as well but I fail to recall which ones.
I eventually gave it to another coworker at a different company circa 2009. I never even got around to hooking up the Genesis and playing it.

I got the Genesis, and Sega CD for Christmas 93 or 94 (Don’t think my Dad was happy about that) because I begged for it. I already had a Nes/Snes. This was probably the most expensive gift I’ve gotten.
Overall, they were decent systems but I much preferred NES/SNES

My first game was Sonic. It was good, but come on, Super Mario World was light years better.

I got my first Sega Genesis in 2015.. I collect this stuff 🙂 However, I got a Sega Master System in either 1986 or 1987. First games for that were Black Belt and Pro Wrestling, outside of Hang On/Safari Hunt which came with it.

I got mine Xmas of 89, packed in with Altered Beast. I think I also got Thunder Force 2 and Super Thunder Blade. Thank god I had the converter to play all my Master System games since those mostly sucked. By the next fall Madden and Lakers Vs Celtics were out and 13 yr old me couldn’t be happier.

I never had a Genesis, I’ve always been a Nintendo guy.

I got mine Genesis in 1994, first game was Jurassic Park Rampage Edition. The game cost half the console price.

“It’s worth emphasizing that Sega is comparing its console to the 8-bit NES here, and not the Super NES”
I would just like to point out that even if the SuperNES had come out, the ad would still make sense.
The Genesis was the better gaming platform than the SuperNES.

Around 2003, with a copy of Sonic as well as Sonic & Knuckles. That’s why I bought it actually. Took me a few years to track down copies of Sonic 2 & 3. And within the last year, I scored a 32X so I could play Knuckles Chaotix. All fun titles.
