[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Super High Impact
January 11th, 2016 by Benj EdwardsPeople seem to be talking about football a lot these days, and I’m not quite sure why. To appease the raving hordes, I thought I’d throw out a Football retro scan. In this case, it’s for Super High Impact on the Sega Genesis.
I’ve never been a fan of Football video games in general — my favorite is probably still Tecmo Bowl for the NES. Nostalgia for that game’s intro music alone is enough to get me to play it a couple times a year.
Discussion Topic of the Week: What’s your all-time favorite American football video game from the pre-32-bit era?

The first thing that came to mind was an arcade game, Pigskin 621 A.D. (1990) Bally Midway. But upon further reflection I’d have to go with Cyberball (1990) Tengen/Sega on the Genesis, if for no other reason than the memories of renting the game one weekend with a friend and then having a blast playing the heck out of it. That and the sheer joy of exploding robotic football players.

NFL Blitz, made by the same people as the greatest basketball game, NBA JAM

Joe Montana 2 Sports Talk Football for the Sega Genesis was fun at the time, and later I remember liking Madden NFL ’95 for the SNES. I also have to give honorable mention to Mutant League Football for the Genesis.

Video football achieved perfection in 1979 with Intellivision NFL Football. It’s two-player only, and requires a printed playbook for entering various play combinations on the keypad, but it’s very fun.

The comments on that YouTube video include a number people reminiscing about their favourite play combination codes. I don’t know how anyone could remember such specific details about a game 25 or 30 years later, but there it is.

Techomo Super Bowl for the SNES is to me the best. I enjoy Madden but it’s not as good a game to me.

Techmo Super Bowl for the NES without a doubt!! It was the first 8 bit game that actually had real NFL teams. My roommate and I played thru a whole season (some 350+ games) using his team, Pittsburgh Steelers, and my team L.A. Raiders. Wish I could remember who won our Super Bowl, tho… A distant second would be Mutant League Football for the Genesis. Take Madden and replace players with mutants and aliens, brilliant!!

I have to agree with tortimer on both Cyberball and Pigskin 621 AD. I loved Cyberball and always wondered why they didn’t try to expand on the game with a season long/franchise feature. It was solid arcade football and the AI was pretty good. I liked the fact that you couldn’t just call the same plays over and over again on offense.
Pigskin was the football version of the Arch Rivals basketball game. Fun arcade football, simple controls.

Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES! A game so great that people still do roster updates for it every year!
