Twenty Years of the Sega Genesis
November 6th, 2008 by Benj EdwardsLast night, Ars Technica published my latest historical piece, “Genesis of Success: 20 Years of Sega’s Dark Horse Console,” which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Sega Mega Drive’s launch in Japan.
While researching Genesis history, I found that the story behind its success in America was surprisingly unique and interesting. To find out more, check out the the article — and please feel free to leave comments on your Genesis and Mega Drive memories.
(On a technical note, I didn’t write any of the text describing the games in the section at the end. So if you see something weird in there, it’s not my doing. I did select the games, albeit very quickly.)

ah the genesis. so many great memories. Streets of rage, golden axe, altered beast, sonic, and my all time favorite video game service – Sega Channel. I still play my genesis systems regularly and greatly enjoy picking them up for around $5 at thrift stores and cleaning them up to look like they just rolled off the assembly line.

I didn’t own a Mega Drive back in the day (being a Commodore type of guy back then) but a friend of mine did and I have some very fond memories of it. So fond memopries that I now have four Mega Drives myself. The games I remember the most are the NHL series (and EA Hockey), Centurion: Defender of Rome (a game that didn’t get the recognition it deserved), Sonic and Road Rash.
I remember me and my friend having private Road Rash moments on our bikes on the way back home from school. To be honest it was mostly my friend – who used to say “Road Rash” and then follow it up the next second with a kick on my front wheel. It did give me some bruises. Yeah, video game violence affects the youth. 😀
