I’m gonna have to go with ZORK. Text based ftw.

  2. JayP Says:

Questron and Bard’s Tale on the C64,
    Oh, such nerdness.

  3. Robert Says:

    Darklands.

  4. JackSoar Says:

Wizardry. And if I had to pick one, Wizardry VII. Although I really like the SNES port of Wizardry V.

  5. t3hfr3ak Says:

because i cant think of any retro ones off the top of my head, I will just say Final Fantasy VII, it had a PC port that I proudly own 😀

  6. Bjorn Nitmo Says:

Ultima IV. Everything else pales in comparison.

my fav RPG games of all time, in order:

    1. Ultima VII. havent found any game that can even match the interactivity and varieties of its world.
    2. Wasteland, Fallout 1 & 2. Played the third, but just not the same…
    3. Fallout 3. See, i’m not stuck in the past… hahahahaha

  8. MYNAMEHERE Says:

I’m going with Phantasy Star IV. Great comic style graphics in the cutscenes, and an interesting game dynamic which took some getting used to. Premade chars are a pro in this case, in my opinion. It would take away from the storyline to have to constantly mess around designing chars. For those that don’t know, Phantasy Star IV had this ecological apocalypse theme, everything from global warming to the death of the dinosaurs by comet, to ice age, to the collapse of an Atlantis equivalent.

  9. Flamtap Says:

I have to say that I’m partial to the old SSI gold box series… Especially “Pool of Radiance” on my old Apple IIe!

  10. pinball22 Says:

Wasteland is my favorite. 🙂 The Bard’s Tales and the original gold-box games would all be close behind, though.

  11. teebo Says:

Then: Tunnels of Doom for the TI-99/4A
    Now: Fallout 3

  12. Layne Says:

Balder’s Gate is still really good (still have NWN installed). Just about anything by Origin was good (Ultima, Bad Blood, etc.). Diablo was good for less story-driven. I have my discs and docs for Wasteland around somewhere. I enjoyed Planescape: Torment, too.

But my favorite of all time is still NetHack (I always have NetHack installed on at least one computer at all times — currently playing Powder on my AT&T Fuze). Less story driven and you don’t get to allocate your skill points, but it’s a classic.

  13. Chuckles Says:

2400 A.D. was awesome! Basically Ultima III with a sci-fi skin.

I think it’s where in the world is carmen sandiego?, when i was a kid, together with test drive, this was my weekend fun….

  16. Benj Edwards Says:

Wow. Glad to see I still have readers out there. I was beginning to think that I had bored everyone to sleep. 🙂

Excellent choices, everyone. I guess I’ll chime in with some of my favorites: Ultima VI & VII. If Ultima Online counts, I’d mention that too. Oh, and DikiMUDs in general. I’m sure there are some others that I’m forgetting.

  17. Chris Says:

Suspended, and most of the Scott Adams adventures. I had a bunch of them on ROM cartridges for my VIC-20, seems like a million years ago.

  18. Brian DeMarzo Says:

    Three come to mine…

Ultima IV and V — IV for setting a new standard, V for refining it and a great storyline.

    Planescape: Torment — incredible storytelling.

Fallout 1/2 (though 3 is nice, I’m not as much a fan).

OK maybe that’s five, but three groups. 🙂

  19. godzookie72 Says:

Wasteland c64, no doubt, gotta love those hobo dogs

  20. Russell Says:

Wow – Wasteland, that brought back great memories. I remember a game called Legacy of the Ancients as well. I appreciated those two games alot, but my vote has to go to Ultima IV. RG was a man ahead of his time back then.

  21. Eric Says:

The original Fallout. Save State Syndrome aside, rarely have I been so dragged in a fictional universe than when I played it. Beautiful (in a bleak way) atmosphere and great dialogues.

But really, just wanted to comment that when I saw covers like this one of the game Wasteland, dreams of the day when games could reach that level of visual beauty started poping up in my mind with incredible speed.

Actually still dream about it, really. Patience is a virtue…

  22. The Doctor Says:

While I loved Wasteland and Zork, I still find myself going back to Neuromancer by Interplay when I feel nostalgic. I still enjoy aspects of the game like tracking down utilities, decoding passwords, and trying to navigate the cyberspace half of the game without a map or list of where everything is.

  23. Cody Says:

    Deus Ex …
