[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Werewolf: The Last Warrior

More mediocrity than my attention can hold.
I was so excited when I first saw Werewolf: The Last Warrior in my local Blockbuster, circa 1991. I excitedly rented the game and took it home, only to have my hopes dashed against the rocks of expectation upon inserting it into my NES and playing.
The game was terrible. Well… to be generous, it was an intensely derivative action-platformer, Ã la Ninja Gaiden — one of hundreds on the NES platform.
While Werewolf may not be remembered for original gameplay, it will forever be immortalized as one of VC&G’s 2009 Halloween Costume Ideas. And that’s the way it should be.

weirdest video game main character? the one and only Pac-Man. nothing but a yellow ball with a little section cut off for a mouth..

Not sure if this counts, since it was text rather than graphical — but I’d have to vote, offhand, for the ‘person’ in the Infocom game Suspended. As I recall, it was essentially a human’s consciousness/brain hooked into a vast planet-controlling computer system.
Second to that would be another Infocom game, A Mind Forever Voyaging…in which case the character was an artificial intelligence program that could interact with both the ‘real’ world and simulations of various points in its country’s theoretical future. (Now that I think about it, that’s an odd idea considering that the “AI” was being controlled by a human player in reality.)

My vote for modern challenger would be the eponymous Super Meat Boy.
Restricting to retro classics, I’ll definitely second the motion for PRISM of A Mind Forever Voyaging.

I always thought the droid from One Man And His Droid was pretty odd. You couldn’t do anything directly to the critters you had to herd but you could dig tunnels (kinda) and could shove them around.

Even though it was never released on the NES, I would say the weirdest video game character name I can remember is Bio-Force Ape.

It looks rad. I remember renting a lot of console games in the 90s and being really misled and disappointed by the actual gameplay.
