That’s a simple question. Might and Magic, specifically 3-5. Great games, and easy to learn.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 are currently fighting it out for second place.

  2. Fenn Says:

Might and Magic 3-Isles of Terra

AMAZINGLY fun 😀 Loved exploring every square :>

Dungeon Master. I finished it numerous times on ST, Amiga and Super NES. I love the way it handles hunger, thirst, tireness of the characters, their experience, the weight of the equipment. It was so realistic. I loved the dark atmosphere. Really scaring. Playing it in the dark was really great!

I’m a Morrowind guy myself. Bone ugly. Abstruse leveling and crafting systems. Wonky as a mother unless you install the fan patch.

But it’s also both deep and expansive in a very satisfying way, and it gets extra points for being about colonialism and slavery in addition to the usual RPG themes.

I would say either Morrowind or Oblivion, but since I always played those in third-person, I don’t count those. Wizardry VII would get my vote.

Morrowind. No contest. Not so much for the story, but the fact that – thanks to the modding community – you can make it all your own. That process (by the way) is not for the faint of heart.

Morrowind for me too. Unlike the previous Morrowind fans above I actually loved it for the story and the gameplay mechanics. But more than that, when the game was released it was absolutely beautiful.

From that first look of the sunset, to walking in the wilderness during a rainstorm, to exploring the eerie caves. The graphics were wonderful and the game had atmosphere in abundance.

And the huge modding community makes the game seem endless, but that’s just a bonus!

Ultima Underworld. The first one, to be specific.

Although the sequel did correct some technical things (no warping textures, more detail, no inventory bug) and its levels were even more varied I always liked the atmosphere of the first one better. It just felt more consistent, but the levels still had a lot individuality and I thought I had more freedom. It was the first game that offered me a “virtual reality romp” in a dungeon and I replayed it twice just because of that.

It’s neither my favorite CRPG (Ultima VII – Black Gate), nor my all-time favorite 3D game world (Thief series) but it definitely earned its place as best 3D CRPG of all time.

By the way, my favorite 3D space shooter of all time is still the original Star Raiders for the 8-bit Atari computers – I never throw away old heroes for better graphics!

Telengard. I loved Telengard…still do, in fact.

  10. Cody Says:

    Oblivion, for the “dark” quests.
