[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Ominous Zelda Portents
January 31st, 2011 by Benj EdwardsDespite what you see above, the game featured in this double page advertisement is not set in New York City. It’s set in Termina, a weird place where kids wear lots of masks to get things done. And like Groundhog Day, time keeps looping until you do everything just so. The perpetual déjà vu can be frustrating — nay, maddening. But it may also be genius, and a small subset of loyal Zelda fans call The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask one of the best titles in the series.
It also turned ten years old last November. Happy birthday!
P.S. This scan marks five years of Retro Scan of the Week. Read more about it here.
Discussion Topic of the Week: How do you feel Majora’s Mask ranks in the pantheon of Zelda games? Near the top? Near the bottom?

I’m partial to the older 2D Zelda’s, particularly Link to the Past, so Majora’s Mask is about 4th on my list. It looses points for the repetitive-ness, backtracking, difficult timing of event, and difficulty exploring the area outside of the town. However, while I may contradict myself, I like the plethora of events that are there to do.

I really enjoyed the game. This is definitely in my top ten. I revisited it a while back and it held up quite well. I have to agree with jdiwnab though. The 2D Zeldas are my favorites. I even loved Link’s Awakening when it came out on Gameboy. Played that game for hours on end.

Majora’s Mask marked the point at which I stopped playing the Zelda series, which sums up my feelings towards the game quite well.

Somehow, I never played a Zelda game in my life.

Why do you ask of me Francisco Dans? Do you wish to play?

I remember that ad campaign. Never saw the print versions of the ad but I do remember the TV ones. I do need to play through that one again since I I’ve only done it once.
