[ Retro Scan of the Week ] Grand Prix Hair
April 9th, 2012 by Benj EdwardsThis makes me want to watch Top Gun for some reason.
This magazine ad for Accolade’s Grand Prix Circuit (1988) reminds us of a time when folks were less kind to their hair — and when sunglasses engulfed half of your face.
It also reminds me of how wonderful it was when racing games switched to polygon-based graphics. If any video game genre benefited most from the shift from sprites to 3D polygons, it was racing. I mourned the loss of 2D pixel art in just about every game style except racing games, where the freedom of movement afforded by 3D environments heralded a new dawn for the genre.
Discussion Topic of the Week: What did your hair look like in the 1980s? Bonus points if you can link to a 1980s photo of yourself!

Sadly, in the 1980s, I had little to no choice in my hairstyle. I was pretty much just given a crew cut.

I pretty much kept my hair uncut and in a braid, like in this pic from 1988:

Unless someone challenges, Xyzzy is top choice to win the 1980s Picture Contest of Champions.

Loved this game. I used to cut these ads out of Run, VG&CE, Compute’s Gazzette, AmigaWorld, etc. This was one of the ones hanging on my wall.

Does anyone remember the intro screen to this game? The guitar riffs were incredible. They really put a lot of effort into that digitized music. I did play it on the C64, not sure if it was as good on other systems.

I had this game for DOS! Copied the diskette from a friend. It had piracy protection, whereby you had to fill-in-the-blank in a sentence that was supposedly from the users manual. Most of the time I guessed correctly, and if I couldn’t, I would restart the game and get another question. GOOD TIMES!
